The large print giveth and the small print taketh away.

Tom Waits
About This Quote

The old saying, “The large print giveth and the small print taketh away,” is a common saying that can be found in many languages. However, this may have originated from the Bible in the Book of Judges when The Israelites crossed the River Jordan after escaping from slavery in Egypt. The men in leadership were so concerned about the dangers of the river that they made a law to get their affairs in order. The elders were required to make lists of everything they owned and everything they needed to get across the river.

When all was ready to move, they put their goods on their backs and set out for safety. However, on the way back, some of the men were unable to continue because of old age or sickness and had to turn back. When they got back to camp, they found that everyone else had already crossed over except for them.

So what did they do? They went back and got their belongings and walked across once more! They would not be denied their freedom by such a small detail as an old list or some other little thing.
